Since it’s October, I’ll be reviewing a horror/dark fantasy book!
Penpal is the debut book of writer Dathan Auerbach. The story revolves around the main character, presumably Dathan, and his mysterious childhood that he decides to investigate. The story is written in little snippets of his memory, and step-by-step his chilling childhood is exposed.
As I read the first chapter, I slowly came to realize that I had read it before, a story that I had found on reddit.com/r/nosleep, a place for stories that, well, don’t make you sleep. After some thorough researching, I found out that the writer is actually nosleep user 1000vultures, whose writing persuaded many people to aid him in publishing his book on kickstarter.net. Luckily for all you cheap people who don’t want to waste money on a paperback, the story is still available on reddit.
The book was beautifully written, and I could not put it down. I literally read it in class and in the car. In retrospect, the story was quite short, but terribly chill inducing. I’ll tell you a secret, in the story, the main character was stalked as a child, all the way through to his teenage years. While in the story, he as a child, is oblivious to his close encounters, as an adult, he realizes how foolish he was.
My final verdict – The book is a great stand alone, and one that would stick in your head. Of course, being the bookworm I am, I’m ending this with book recommendations! 1) Pen Pal by Dathan Auerbach 2) Miss Peregrine’s House for Peculiar Children & Miss Peregrine’s House for Peculiar Children: Hollow City by Ransom Riggs 3) Asylum by Madeleine Reux
