Hollow City is the second installment to the Peculiar Children’s series.
Written by Ransom Riggs in 2014, this is the second book he has written thus far. The series is a young adult and dark fantasy book, with peculiar powers, ancient languages and of course, evil creatures. Warning; this article is NOT spoiler free.
The first book is titled Miss Peregrine’s House for Peculiar Children. It opens with a ‘horrific family tragedy that sets sixteen-year-old Jacob on a journey to a remote island’ where he looks into his Grandfather’s past, and discovers that maybe his Grandfather wasn’t all that he is. The second book continues the story from the end of the first book.
The second book takes you through a journey in the war-ridden 1940s of Britain. The peculiars have just ventured out of the Miss Peregrine’s loop for the first time in a hundred years. And well, they’ve got limited time before they start aging, and time is running fast. Another thing to like (other than the wonderful plot) is that the book has a mixture of old and, might I say, peculiar photos that mix in with the story line. So if you ever get bored reading, you could just flip through the pages and stare at the photos in the book.
Keep your eyes open, the third installment to the Miss Peregrine’s Series is right around the corner. A movie is coming underway, as well as graphic novel. My final verdict is that this series is something you must read (if you’re a dark fantasy/horror-thriller person). Of course, being the bookworm I am, I’m ending this with book recommendations! Of course, the ‘Miss Peregrine’ Series should be number one. Asylum is also a good book to read, you be the judge of it. Another good book that is available online for free is Dathan Auerbach’s Pen Pal, which started out as a horror series in reddit’s nosleep. The book talks about all too real horrors of stalking. Seriously chill inducing and scary enough to keep you up at night.
